Hi,

Here is a practice question on Analogies.

EMOLLIENT : IRRITATION ::
(1) analgesic : pain
(2) anaesthesia : sleep
(3) balm : euphoria
(4) stimulant : energy
(5) coagulant : blood

You are welcome to discuss the question here. Will post the correct answer shortly.

The answer is choice (5). Answer

coagulant : blood

A coagulant stops blood as an emollient stops irritation.

Is that right?

It is definitely not the choices with Euphoria and energy. However, I am unsure with the other 3. I think it is either 1 or 5, but I am not sure of the exact meaning of analgesic. Is it something that induces sleep or reduces pain?

@ nandu and greprep,

Am sorry, but you guys have got the answers wrong. Before you attempt an Analogy question, form a statement that defines the relationship between the two words in the question stem.

An emollient does not stop irritation, it soothes / reduces irritation. What would be a similar relationship?

An Analgesic soothes pain just as an emollient reduces irritation. Correct answer - (3)

Another reason why Coagulant:blood would not work is that there is a negative connotation to the relationship between the two. While an emollient reducing irritation is always good, a coagulant blocking / stopping blood would not be.
